Though we talk a lot about money and finance on this blog, that’s only one component of wealth. True Self-Wealth comes from finding and living your Purpose and cultivating Hope, in addition to financial Security.

When you’re thinking about your Purpose, consider what matters most to you in life. Your family? Your career? Your health and wellbeing? Social justice? The natural world?

It’s just as important to invest in your Purpose as it is to invest in the stock market or your 401K. These are the elements that make you human and fuel your life—don’t neglect them! I’d like you to really think about your Purpose(s) and the things that drive you.

How can you spend a little more time and energy on them? To get you started, I’ve come up with a list of 5 nonfinancial investments you can make. It’s possible not all of these will apply to you, but feel free to pick the ones that do and make an investment this week. Your Purpose is worth it!

1. Invest in your family

If your family is one of your core drivers, be sure to make a concerted effort to set time aside for them every week (or every day!). Designate a family game night, attend your child’s soccer game, or plan a family outing. At the very least, practice good listening, and pay attention when your significant other or children tell you something.

2. Invest in a hobby

Most of us have passions and interests outside of work, but we don’t always take the time to pursue them. Whether you’re interested in painting, woodwork, hiking, reading, or golf, it’s worth it to invest time and resources in a hobby. This will help you be a more well-rounded person and give you the kind of fulfillment that work doesn’t always provide.

3. Invest in relationships

Relationships are vital! Whether we’re talking about a friendship, a professional connection, or a romantic relationship, it is crucial to spend time building bonds between yourself and others. Unfortunately, these are the things that often fall by the wayside when we’re busy. Don’t let that happen! Even sharing a quick chat over coffee is a great way to revitalize a relationship.

4. Invest a moment

It pays to be kind. If you see someone trying to juggle a toddler while unloading their grocery cart, offer to help–invest a moment of your time. If you notice a co-worker having a hectic day, offer to grab their coffee or do another small task for them. Kindness has a way of coming around.

5. Invest in the world

You have the power to make a positive change. Small actions can make a big difference, and it’s better to do something rather than nothing at all. Volunteer at a soup kitchen (Bonus: bring your children or grandchildren and help instill a sense of service in them), spearhead a fundraiser, pick up liter, reduce your energy usage, work on a social justice cause, volunteer at the humane society…the list goes on and on! You’re bound to find a volunteer opportunity that fits your personality and values. Giving back helps the world and gives you a greater sense of purpose and responsibility.

What investments will you make this week? This month? Commit to one or two today and start growing your Purpose.
