How do you define happiness? It’s a question that sounds simple, but once you start thinking about it, it gets complex quickly. Do people around you give you happiness? Do you create it yourself? Can happiness be bought?

While everyone’s definition of happiness is unique, I’ve discovered some universal qualities that, to me, are the baseline of happiness: Security, Purpose, and Hope.

As a financial advisor, I see life through a unique lens. I know how a person’s finances can affect their mental and emotional wellbeing. Financial Security is definitely important to living a life that’s less stressful and uncertain. However, it’s not the be all, end all.

I’ve worked with people who are very financially secure, but still do not exude joy. What’s holding them back? It may be that they are working or living outside of their Purpose.

To me, Purpose (one of the three pillars of Self-Wealth) is just as necessary as Security. It’s what makes you excited to get up in the morning and start the day. Your Purpose might be driven by your work, your family, or any number of factors. The important thing is keeping your Purpose at the center of your life.

Lastly, if you don’t have Hope, Purpose and Security hardly matter. In my work as a financial advisor, I am often met with pessimism and skepticism. People seemingly want to believe all the bad news they’re hearing and reading. They expect the stock market to fail or our global trade allies to turn their backs on us.

Why think that way? Why go through life expecting the worst? What good does this kind of thinking do?

When I first became a financial advisor, I didn’t realize I would have to be a voice of optimism and Hope for my clients, but that is exactly what I’ve become. I see many reasons to Hope all around us, every day. If you’re able to see Hope, it will be much easier to find your happiness.

So, how do you define happiness?

Give that question some thought today and ask yourself what changes you may need to make to truly meet your happiness potential. Are you saving enough? Is your job really making you happy? Would it be healthy to change your outlook from one of pessimism to one filled with hope? These are just some of the tough questions you may need to confront in order to find your joy.
